Even a massive international rugby match, a last minute change to the bike course and ever-changeable Wicklow weather did not deter the sixty-five keen athletes from all over Ireland who turned out in Ashford earlier today for the annual September 3Rock Duathlon.
The September Duathlon has established a niche status on the race calendar among loyal athletes who come back year after year, and is attracting new competitors from as far away as Donegal and Cork. This year, the race was designated as an age group selection race..
Competition among the top five men was especially keen, with the winner having to battle it out for the full thirty kilometers to claim first place by just one second. Further details and photos are available at www.triathlonireland.com.
Many thanks to 3rock club members and supporters who turned out in force to provide marshalling, catering, administrative, and logistical support. Many thanks also to the Order of Malta for providing medical cover, and to Elite Timing for a very professional job - and of course to the TI Technical Officials 'Ditch' Moore and Brendan Mannix, and ever diligent Draft Buster Willie Purcell, who rose to the challenges and did a very thorough job in the best spirit.. Well done to all.

Race Report - Aquathon July 2011
After a wild and stormy afternoon, the clouds lifted perfectly on cue at 7.30PM yesterday evening for the 3-Rock inaugural Greystones Aquathon. Forty-four keen athletes from as far away as Derry and Antrim, and from clubs closer to home like Naas and Wicklow, took to the beautiful clear turquoise waters of the Irish Sea at South Beach. Water was a little on the choppy side but a steady favourable current and attentive marshalling helped ensure swimmers got safely to the finish line.
Karl Gildea was first out of the water, with a clear lead on the posse, with Conor O'Keefe and Neal O'Grady arriving in hot pursuit. All three got off to a strong start for the 2.5k run up the road to the turnaround at the Kilcoole Athletics track car park, with a gradual, modest 300 metre hill climb approaching the tunraround. Competition was keen all the way. Conor O'Keefe sprinted home in first place, just ahead of Karkl Gildea. First lady across the finish line was Siobhan Duggan.
Congratulations to all for taking a chance on the weather and getting another fine tradition in the world of Triathlon Sport in Ireland off to a fine start, and of course many, many thanks to 3-Rock club members and supporters, and Civil Defence personnel, for providing vital stewarding and logistical help. Thanks also to the county council for their support.
Hope to see you all for 3-Rock Duathlon on September 17th - Online entry now open https://www.triathlonireland-newserver.com/local-races.html
